OK2A has posted a new online petition directed at US Senator Tom Coburn asking him to author legislation in the Senate to repeal the Federal Gun Free School Zones Act (GFSZA). This law is nothing more than the federal governments attempt to criminalize honest, law-abiding gun owners.
If you are traveling out of state with an Oklahoma concealed carry permit, even if in a state Oklahoma has a reciprocity agreement with, anytime you pass within 1,000 feet of a school, you are committing a federal felony under the GFSZA. This is a bad law and needs to be repealed.
Senator Coburn has previously promised he would start legislation to repeal GFSZA in the Senate if a Representative would start similar legislation in the House of Representatives. Last year, Congressman Ron Paul filed legislation in the House to repeal GFSZA, but as of yet, Senator Coburn still has not filed legislation in the Senate. Join us in asking Senator Coburn to repeal GFSZA. Sign our Repeal GFSZA Petition today.
Text of the petition:
United States Senator Dr. Tom Coburn:
The Oklahoma Second Amendment Association urges you to immediately introduce legislation to repeal Title 18 USC §922(q) “The Federal Gun Free School Zones Act.” As currently enacted, this law makes it impossible for any armed citizen to travel any reasonable distance in any developed area unless they have a CCW permit physically issued by the state in which they are traveling. Although an Oklahoma permit holder is exempt in Oklahoma, it is impossible for them to visit any of the thirty-five states that recognize Oklahoma's permit. Importantly, the BATFE has made clear through their letters and actions that they have the will and the ability to arrest permit holders and other citizens legally armed under state law.
As a result, many Oklahoma permit holders find themselves forced to forfeit their right to interstate travel, believing it unacceptable to compromise their family's safety in order to comply with this draconian law. It is therefore imperative that this conflict be addressed, and the laws of the forty-nine states that issue permits be recognized.
Furthermore, a bill was recently introduced in the US House of Representatives, HR 2613, which would repeal Title 18 USC §922(q). We believe this creates an excellent opportunity for your action in the Senate.
I Support Repealing Title 18 USC §922(q), The Federal Gun Free School Zones Act
