Repeal the Federal Gun Free School Zones Act

OK2A has posted a new online petition directed at US Senator Tom Coburn asking him to author legislation in the Senate to repeal the Federal Gun Free School Zones Act (GFSZA).  This law is nothing more than the federal governments attempt to criminalize honest, law-abiding gun owners.

If you are traveling out of state with an Oklahoma concealed carry permit, even if in a state Oklahoma has a reciprocity agreement with, anytime you pass within 1,000 feet of a school, you are committing a federal felony under the GFSZA.  This is a bad law and needs to be repealed.

Senator Coburn has previously promised he would start legislation to repeal GFSZA in the Senate if a Representative would start similar legislation in the House of Representatives.  Last year, Congressman Ron Paul filed legislation in the House to repeal GFSZA, but as of yet, Senator Coburn still has not filed legislation in the Senate.  Join us in asking Senator Coburn to repeal GFSZA.  Sign our Repeal GFSZA Petition today.

Text of the petition:

United States Senator Dr. Tom Coburn:

The Oklahoma Second Amendment Association urges you to immediately introduce legislation to repeal Title 18 USC §922(q) “The Federal Gun Free School Zones Act.” As currently enacted, this law makes it impossible for any armed citizen to travel any reasonable distance in any developed area unless they have a CCW permit physically issued by the state in which they are traveling. Although an Oklahoma permit holder is exempt in Oklahoma, it is impossible for them to visit any of the thirty-five states that recognize Oklahoma's permit. Importantly, the BATFE has made clear through their letters and actions that they have the will and the ability to arrest permit holders and other citizens legally armed under state law.

As a result, many Oklahoma permit holders find themselves forced to forfeit their right to interstate travel, believing it unacceptable to compromise their family's safety in order to comply with this draconian law. It is therefore imperative that this conflict be addressed, and the laws of the forty-nine states that issue permits be recognized.

Furthermore, a bill was recently introduced in the US House of Representatives, HR 2613, which would repeal Title 18 USC §922(q). We believe this creates an excellent opportunity for your action in the Senate.

I Support Repealing Title 18 USC §922(q), The Federal Gun Free School Zones Act

To a person of rational and common sense thought, the only purpose this Title 18 serves is to keep ONLY the legal and law abiding citizens of the United States from carrying a weapon on school grounds. This, among literally hundreds of other laws, should be left up to each State and only each State for them to decide, as the Constitution very clearly spells out. What it actually does is make literally thousands of LEGAL and LAW ABIDING to become FELONS for merely driving by a school on an interstate highway, not even being aware of a school.
This is wrong. The members of BOTH HOUSES were aware of it when authored, discussed, and voted on it. I feel that any member of either the Senate or Congress that voted for this and may now state he/she was unaware of the consequences is a LIAR. The BATFE has been authorized to exert all and any authority to arrest and convict "anyone" violating this to the fullest extent of the law. Would you or any of your colleague"s like to go to Federal prison for driving down the highway. I think not, and nor do we, the legal 2nd Amendment believing citizens of the United States.
Senator Coburn, I have sent many e-mails to you over a period of time, but regarding this injustice, as someone who helps pay your salary, has supported and voted for you for years, I have to not only ask and urge you to start this repeal, I feel that I must insist that you do.
Get the ball rolling on this before it goes unattended any longer and causes hardship and grief on many Americans. Thank you

Don't you just love it when someone can't debate on the issue so they resort to petty personal attacks.
